The Iraqi government has worked to manage and overlook related issues of mine and unexploded ordnance issues after the regime change in (2003) by establishing a department that adopts a mine action program in Iraq that works in accordance with international standards. However, this program began with slow steps, as the cleared areas did not exceed (27) square kilometers in (237) locations from the nine affected governorates, as a result of the security conditions at that time, which continued until the year (2008).
After the established association of the Department of Mine Affairs with the Ministry of Environment, which took it upon itself to adopt this fundamental issue. As a result, Iraq joined the international conventions concerned with mines, such as the Ottawa Mine Convention and the Oslo Convention (2009). It also surveyed the contaminated areas in the governorates of Thi Qar, Muthanna, Missan, Basrah and Wassit, and implemented many mine clearance projects: Including a survey of disabled survivor victims and the creation of a database for them, increasing care and rehabilitation for the disabled by ratifying the International Convention for the Care of Persons with Disabilities in 2013, launching awareness and education campaigns on the dangers of mines in all central and southern governorates of Iraq in cooperation with the relevant ministries and international organizations, setting local national standards to deal with these wastes.
