The technical staff of Directorate for Mine Action followed up two cases of cluster munition injuries in Al-Rahba area within Al-Najaf province, southwest of Baghdad.

The Director General of DMA, Eng. Dhafir Mahmood, said that the technical staff of RMAC-Middle Euphrates and Victim Assistance Department followed up the two cases, where  the first victim ( born in 2011) was exposed to amputation below the knee of the left leg. The second victim (  born in 2006) was exposed to multiple injuries as a result of the explosion of a BLU 97 cluster munition because they tampered with it during grazing the livestock in that area.

Mahmood added that this bomb is one of the remnants of the aerial bombardment that took place in Iraq for the period 1991-2003, where Al-Najaf and its desert are the most affected by cluster munitions among the provinces of Middle -Euphrates
