The Director General of DMA, Engineer. Dhafir Mahmood Khallaf, confirmed that Basra province is the most contaminated cities with mines and explosive remnants of war in Iraq and world as a whole.
Khallaf continued that there are about ( 1556 ) square kilometers contaminated with these explosives throughout the southern region, while the area of contaminated region with mines and explosive remnants of war in Basra province is about (1258) square kilometers, the area of contamination with mines specifically in Basra province is about (842) square kilometers, contamination with ERW is about (416) square kilometers, indicating that it was possible to identify (925) square kilometers contaminated with mines or about 95% of contamination extent. He mentioned that the staff of DMA made their efforts related to survey, demining and clearance, indicating that the causes of frequent accidents that occur in different locations of Iraq provinces are due to the shortage of financial, technical and humanitarian capabilities compared to the size and nature of huge contamination that the Iraqi provinces suffered from. At the same time he affirmed the loss of maps that explain the accurate information about the existence of mines and cluster bombs during the wars from 1991-2003 , as they are one of the most complicated problems that hindering the activities of demining and clearance at the present time which requires a great official and international support in order to accelerate the clearance of all these contaminated areas throughout our affected Iraqi provinces.
